wishing for a little paper lantern to light up my life

Nothing happening on the adoption front of course, just dreaming of happy dreams of a little paper lantern to light up my life. My eBay Gymboree paper lanterns line items arrived in the mail, so I've got my "baby clothes are crack for mommies" fix for the week. Sedona must have developed oldest child syndrome already, as she wants all of my attention and is jumping in front of the camera when I try to take pictures.

Poem: I don't look like my mommy

My friend Jeri e-mailed me this poem today.
I'm pretty lucky to have such great friends!

I don’t look like my mommy
People have started to say
I don’t look like my mommy
So I asked her why one day

"Some babies are so special,
They come in different ways
Some must wait for their babies
For days and days and days

Some babies come from close by
The Mom who had them could not stay
Other Mommies are waiting for them
For a baby they pray and pray and pray

Other babies are born in a far-away land
The mommy who had them no longer there
But some Mommies fly across the sea
A baby’s love to share

You may have a different skin color
Or a different kind of hair
But the love Mommy has for her baby
Will truly always be there

No matter how you or I look
One thing will always be true
You are my precious baby
And I will always love you"

AGENCY UPDATE: still waiting on little girls

Kevin talked with our agency today. There haven't been any healthy infant girl referrals since May, and we still have a few families in line ahead of us. What does that mean? Well, no one knows... that's what it means. If they had a handful of girl referrals all at one time (in my dreams!), we could get one anytime. If the girls straggle in one at a time, it could be a while. So, I'm good! I feel so reassured about this process, and we'll just keep going on with or lives... and one day we'll eventually get some exciting news that triggers a life-changing chain of events.

And... speaking of life-changing events, today was gotcha day for little Miranda and her family. Happy, happy day!

And... don't buy this book: Losing Plum Blossom. It's horrible. I had to stop after chapter one. I'm throwing it in the trash, seriously. I really don't want to read a huge novel about a woman from Indiana living in Taipei lusting over a gay physician.

Until then... stay tuned to this channel for more episodes of retail therapy, designer baby burp cloth construction, Chinese cooking, and an endless supply of cutie Sedona babydog pictures. Just don't expect a referral anytime soon. We'll be suprised together when the big day happens. Right, Sedona? What was that? Oh, you want to play fetch with your doggie phone? Okay, gotta go.

I bought these Gymboree pants from the sunflower fields line on eBay gently used. I got as excited about these pants as Sedona does for doggy treats! The paper lanterns pattern onesie and baby blanket packages arrived today too. They are lovely, and make me want to go out and buy some Dreft.

Adoption Humor: The Accidental Adoption

Some of you may have read this before. If not, enjoy!

THE ACCIDENTAL ADOPTION
Have you every noticed that you hear all the time about "accidental" pregnancies, but never about couples who experience "accidental" adoptions? Can you imagine: Honey, sit down. I have some news for you. What is it? Well, I don't know how to say this, so I'll just come out with it. I went out to the mailbox today and . . . well, we got an I-171H. A what?!?! An I-171H? As in, we're going to have another baby?!? It looks that way. But how? We've been so careful! I put away all the blank 1-600A forms. Didn't you hide our homestudy update? Of course I did. But don't forget, there was that one night . . . What night? (pauses) Ohhh, that night. But it was only once. We were just messing around. I didn't print clearly. I didn't even use black ink! (pauses again) But it was kind of fun. (giggles) It was, wasn't it? I'll never forget how cute you looked getting your fingerprints. So now we've got our I171H, eh? But that doesn't always mean you'll adopt, does it? I mean, shouldn't you see the agency or something, make sure everything's okay? I already did. And? I'm five documents along. Five documents! And they're all notarized, certified and authenticated, okay? Just great. There was one small scare when the agency couldn't see the notary's middle initial, but it showed up just fine under the magnifying glass. Thank God. And you, honey? Are you feeling okay? I'm feeling fine. As long as I know you're happy about this. Happy? I'm thrilled! It's always a shock at first when something like this happens, but of course I'm happy.

Adoption Humor: "Oh, I'm sorry... You couldn't adopt?"

Tonight at Barnes and Noble I was blissfully browsing the International Cooking section when my happy thoughts of steamed dumplings and moon cakes were interrupted. A couple looking about 19 years old were looking at What to Expect When You're Expecting, whispering about what's going on in their 7.5 week old pregnancy. I started to turn a little green with envy until I began thinking of this cartoon, an amused grin appeared on my face, and the interruption became much more bearable!

Designer Burp Cloths: Even I could do this!

Here's a project to keep pre-adoptive mommas busy. I've been browsing Etsy lately and looking at all of the beautiful handmade items that people have for sale. I've seen so many people on Etsy selling burp cloths and bibs. I've been thinking, "You know, with some instructions... surely even I could do this." Well, I found some instructions and it's a go! I've got the cloth diapers, my sewing machine is out, and I'm just waiting for the fabric to arrive. Here's a neat site with lots of beautiful Asian fabrics. I'll start with simple burp cloths first and see how it goes before I take on a bib. I've ordered some fabrics online today and can't wait to start!

Still no news from the agency. Have to do things like plan out construction of baby burp cloths to keep busy and keep positive.

6 months

Here we are at six months on the waiting list for a referral. This was to be our average anticipated wait time. We're looking for you, little one... wherever you are.

Chinese proverb helps me with my chi

"If I keep a green bough in my heart,
then the singing bird will come." - Chinese proverb

When we prepare to succeed and believe in our goals,

it’s almost inevitable that we will accomplish them.

What we think about comes about.

No more crying. It doesn't help, just drives me nuts. I'm working on my chi this week, needing some positive energy as I wait, and wait, for news. Retail therapy to the rescue! I've discovered gently used and NWT (new with tags) Gymboree on eBay, and have bought some items from the retired paper lanterns line that I'm very excited about. I also found this bird and blossoms art print on Etsy. It's my inspiration for the week, and I will frame it with this Chinese proverb for Hannah Claire's nursery.

Reed is coming home!

My bloggy friends Jeff and Abbey have got word of their final ruling today and are ready to travel! Just three weeks until they are in Taiwan taking pictures all around town and in the hotel room with the real Reed. Who is going to watch Flat Reed while Jeff and Abbey are away in Taiwan? I am so excited for this little family and their blessings!

feeling a little better

I'm feeling a little better this weekend. I've been anxious last week about getting our family approved by St. Lucy's Center or Chung Yi. I'm trying not to think about it, and work doing all of the house cleaning and laundry that I didn't do while I was in my funk. An update from our agency is supposed to come this week. I don't think I want to know when our info is in Taiwan for approval then matching with a child, because I know it will really stress me out. Ignorance isn't bliss, but it's much less stressful.

My mind is on happier thoughts, especially wanting to paint that baby room, then penciling in the outline of a plum blossom (national flower of Taiwan) tree in for a mural. I'm trying to decide between white blossoms and pink blossoms for the tree, as plum blossoms can be either color.

I'll try to get my head out of the clouds and into the kitchen this week. I found some Won Ton wrappers next to tofu in the produce section of the evil empire store tonight. I'd like to experiment with cooking with them this week. If any of you have made little dumplings before at home and have some favorites, send me links! Send me links to recipes that look good, and I'll post some pics with recipes of what we made.

What the World Eats

If you've visited here lately, you know that I've been interested in Taiwanese food. Well, I'm interested in pretty much anything Taiwanese right now. Anway, here's a cool link that goes along with that theme called What the World Eats. It has pictures of what families from around the world eat in a weeks' time, and the cost of their food. Amazing! If you liked looking at these pictures, also take a look and listen to the audio track of this NPR discussion. They also list exactly what some of the families ate.

my prayer for anxiety relief

"Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light." Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT)

Dear Lord, I need you now because I am full of stress and anxiety. I ask you to come take my heavy burdens. Please carry them for me so I don't have to. I will try not to be afraid, but I feel that way now.

I'm having a very hard time this week. No, I don't have any news... but I'm very worried about the potential for problems. We're supposed to have a personalized update next week. I didn't know I could cry this much. I love my husband so much. He doesn't have answers for me either, but he hugs me and holds my hand so sweetly.

Growing blogroll list

I've moved by blogroll list to it's own site. You're welcome to link to it and also use it as a surfboard to read other's blogs. It's been getting so big lately! As always, if you don't want your Taiwan adoption blog listed or if I haven't discovered yours yet and you'd like listed, let me know. I consider blogs to be public and that you must have wanted people to read them. If you want them to be private you can always password protect them or make them available by invitation only.

A referral for Kathy and Jeff!

Congratulations to my bloggy friends Kathy and Jeff who got a referral of a beautiful itty bitty baby boy yesterday!

Margarita Night: "Yes, Sir. I'll have another. Thank you."

We heard today our update will come Wednesday or Thursday. Today at work I decided that I'm done putting in overtime. My nerves can't take waiting for adoption news AND working 10-15 hours overtime every single week. Summer is nearly over and I feel like I missed it. Kevin's taking me out for dinner now. I think it's a two margarita night. "Yes, Sir. I'll have another. Thank you." That reminds me of a t-shirt for sale. Maybe I need one of these???

eager for news...

I stare at the phone, then check the dial tone. I hit the send/receive button once, twice, three times. No mail. Just eager for news tonight and suffering from tension headaches. Can't seem to concentrate and get it together to do all of the other things I need to get accomplished. I want news so badly I'd even eat canned fermented raw salted pork in return for adoption news. That's right, ewwwww! Send/receive again. No mail. Sigh.

Plum Blossoms and Taiwan Express

Kevin and I are obviously computer people. We love to read, but spend more time in bookstores and ordering from Amazon.com than in libraries. I had the day off today, and we ventured into our local library. A friend in the children's department gave us a personal tour. The story hour room is absolutely beautiful with lots of handpainted murals, and when you turn down the lights... you can turn on the starry night twinkling ceiling complete with shooting stars. I remember loving story hour as a child, and can't wait to have Hannah Claire lugging a huge book bag to go to story hour.

We checked out a few books on Taiwan today at the library, and I read that the plum blossom is the national flower of Taiwan. Now I'm thinking I'd like to paint a mural of a plum blossom tree in a corner of the nursery arching up over the window and maybe growing up on part of the ceiling too. Pretty, symbolic, and not so babyish as Hannah Claire grows up!

Tonight we ate at the Taiwan Express restaurant in Fort Wayne with another pre-adoptive couple. We had a great time and closed the place down, talking for three hours! The food was pretty typical Americanized Chinese food. No stinky tofu, tea eggs, bubble tea, or raw salted pork fermenting in a jar. Kevin is a hot and sour soup fan, and liked theirs because it was a lot more spicy than we've had before. I liked the egg rolls because they were extra thin and crispy on the outside. Now if eating at Taiwan Express could just speed up the Taiwan adoption process....

checking blogs and e-mails multiple times daily

A friend joked with me last night in an e-mail message that she thinks that she checked this blog at work 15 times yesterday. No news! Heehee. I think that's pretty funny! I promised her that I'd send her an e-mail when we get a referral before I post to the blog so she'll know right away. And S.S., you just checked 10 times, not the 15 that you thought!

I'm guilty of checking other's blogs multiple times daily when I'm excited for them as they wait patiently... or not so patiently for news. It's addicting, especially when you're checking on someone's blog that you know is in line right ahead of you with the same agency. Good news for you means good news for me, buddy! So many others have had good adoption news this last week that I keep thinking, maybe I'll have news too! It doesn't help that people have told me that they get good news e-mails from our agency in the middle of the night, and I've heard of people waking up in the middle of the night to check their e-mail every night... and finally finding their referral news at 2am.

If you're a blogger I encourage you to use something like Google Analytics to see where your visitors come from. I started using Analytics on June 10th, and it tells me that I've had visitors from 26 countries and 44 states (missing states are Montana, North Dakota, Delaware, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine). It's inspiring to know that one has readers from all over the globe.

Now I just wish that referral phone call would come along and I'd have something to talk about!!! As soon as we have that little picture in our hands (and in the in-box of our close friends and family) I just have a feeling that I'll have a burst of energy to go-go-go paint the nursery, install closet organizers, buy a crib and other furniture, install cabinet door and toilet seat safety locks, clean the house, wash the dog, spit shine the garage floor... Well, maybe not spit shine the garage floor, but you get the idea. Right now all I want to do is check my e-mail multiple times a day and sit on the couch looking around at clutter... and I have no desire to do anything about it. Bad, Sarah. Bad Bad. It's so bad that I don't even want to look at baby clothes right now. Wow, did I really just write that?!?!?

Bizarre Foods of Taiwan on the Travel Channel

Thanks to our TIVO recording anything with the keyword "Taiwan", we discovered this great show on "bizarre" foods of Taiwan on the Travel Channel. I still can't wait to try fried stinky tofu when we get to Taiwan, but I think I'll skip the uncooked salted pork. Kevin is pretty adventurous. He's willing to try most anything, but his eyes got really wide with surprise while watching this show.

This video clip is just part 1 of 6. To watch the entire hour long show, go to this YouTube link.

Baby Ella Violet and labor dreams

I just got a e-mail that my cousin and his wife had their baby Ella Violet late last night (Friday night)! She's a very cute scrunched up little chub at 8 pounds 10 ounces. I've been told that momma and baby are doing well, but have to be very tired after 24 hours of labor and then a c-section. I love the names Ella and Violet. Beautiful!!!!!

I wasn't going to share this dream with anyone... but I find it really ironic that this happened the night Ella was born. Last night I had my first pregnancy/labor dream. I dreamt that I was in a delivery room, but it was a huge room with four beds with three other couples using them. I remember being really glad that I was being prepped by my doctor and not a stranger I did not know. I was frustrated with Kevin because he forgot to bring my digital camera. I wanted him to go get it for me but he wouldn't leave my side. (Sweet husband.) My mom was there in the background and I knew that she had her camera, but I really wanted *my* camera. My labor was not progressing and I was frustrated. In real life, this "paper pregnancy" sure isn't progressing very quickly either with no news, no news, no news, every week!

Guitar Hero

No baby news, just a little rockin' in the living room.
Here's what we're up to lately, as the new version
of Guitar Hero Rocks the 80s is out.

Happy Birthday to Sedona

After posting this picture from Sedona's birthday, my neighbors brought Sedona over a birthday present. Does Sedona have the best neighbors in the world, or what? Frozen doggy ice cream treats! She liked it as much as ice cream, and there's not so much sticky face syndrome when she's done.

Family Fun Weekend

We went to my grandparents' lake home as family friends from Germany are visiting this week. Mmmmm. Our friends brought lots of German chocolate! The weather was sunny but not too hot... just right for cat napping on a blanket in the grass watching boats go by. Many went innertubing on Sunday as the lake wasn't very crowded. Sedona got to go on a boat ride in my dad's fishing boat and seemed to enjoy it as long as she was in my arms. She slept with us nicely in a camper, but only after growling at a huge German shepherd outside. I can't believe she "talked back" at a big dog that was many, many, many times bigger than our little 10 pound squirt is! We also visited my other grandma in the nursing home. The babydog sat on laps and gave kisses to some people who really enjoyed a little doggy lovin'. That's my good girl!
Here's some pics of my mother and her sisters during their "floatilla" out in the lake. My cousin and his wife are due to have a baby any time this week. I'm looking foward to future summers where our little girls, about the same age, will be able to enjoy family, sun, water, grass, and popsickles together at the lake.

top of the stack

Kevin talked to staff at our agency yesterday. We're pretty much at the top of the stack. Just waiting on either the St. Lucy's Center or Chung Yi to contact our agency and say, "Okay... we've got x number of boys and y number of girls. Send us your next families to match with them." And then (hopefully) a few weeks (hopefully 1-2, please please please) later we'll be contacted with a referral where we're told that we're matched with a child.

Ya know, the timing just might we right for a referral while we're traveling in Texas in September to visit with Kevin's sister and her family! So many people say they get their referral calls when they're away from home! We haven't even been out of the Hoosier state since we visited Kevin's family in Florida for Christmas. I'm ready to get the heck out of town!

This week I "met" online a really nice gal that knows her info has been sent to St. Lucy's and it's taking a long while to hear back. We talked on the phone and I felt that we really connected and have a lot in common. Our prayers go out to her and other loving families in limboland waiting nervously for information. I've got to share and learn so much from other Taiwan adoptive families. Thanks so much guys!

Sedona's fine now... no tummy trouble, but she's not behaving at the groomer. The groomer says that Sedona won't let her clean her ears. We're going out to buy dog ear cleaning powder and solution today. I had no idea that one was supposed to remove the little hairs from inside dog ears so they don't trap ear wax. I wouldn't like my ears tweezed, either! And I thought eyebrow waxing was no fun! So, Sedona's going to be pretty mad at mommy and daddy when we attempt a good ear cleaning this weekend. Kevin wonders if one could use nose hair trimmers to just trim the hair in dog ears really well rather than pull it out. Sigh! The rough life of dog parenthood!

Crib Poll - drop down or stationary?

The cribs we've looked at have a stationary side. I worry about being able to scoop baby up when the mattress is all the way down. What do the rest of you shorties with crib experience have to say about the matter?

New Flooring - Part 2: The Nursery

Here's the last of the flooring pictures now that the nursery flooring is completed. Hannah's first Robeez shoes and my Gymboree Gymbucks purchases arrived in the mail today too. This afternoon I put all of happy clothes on the bed and organized my dreams of little onesies and dresses by size. I think Hannah's all set in sizes 12-18, 18-24, and pretty well off in 2T. I'll get some more basic pants and jeans closer to when we need them. Once a referral comes our way, I think I can put my energy into the nursery. Right now I just can't let myself paint until it's all for real... until we're been matched and things are ready to move into the courts. If I painted and then something went wrong, it would make me very sad to spend hours painting back over pink, cream, and brown happiness.

5 months

We're at the 5 month mark today. The waiting has gotten easier and easier lately. I think it's gotten easier for several reasons: the answer to my prayers, from the support we've gotten from family and friends in our local community and Taiwan adoption community, and of course the growing pile of "retail therapy" from Gymboree helps me smile and think about fun things to come.

Isaiah 40:31 - Inspiration for Waiting Families
"But those who wait on the LORD will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint." I got a lot of inspiration from this Adoption and Fire blog post this morning. It is a must read for pre-adoptive waiting families.

Kevin and I cleaned out the junk room... er... the nursery tonight in preparation for the wood laminate flooring installation to continue bright and early tomorrow morning. I'll have more pictures soon, of course.

New Flooring - Part 1

There's more to come next week for the nursery, but the kitchen and great room are finished. I'm so happy with the way this turned out. Things will be so easy to clean when baby learns to throw food from the high chair.

v signs

Could anyone explain to me the hand gesture that looks like the peace sign to me here in the US to me? Why do a lot of Taiwanese flash the sign in pictures and what does it mean when they do that? Does it mean "I'm happy"? Just trying to understand, and I'd appreciate your answers in the comments section. Seems to be a trendy thing for the younger crowd. Thanks, guys!

Post edited Saturday, July 21st at 2:05pm.
I originally called this hand gesture a fob sign, as that's how I saw it described in lots of photo captions. Since then I've edited this post as I discovered that the term fob can mean "fresh off the boat" and can be used by some as an insult, but some Asian Americans use it with pride. No offense was meant by this post. I'm just trying to understand what this hand gesture means when used by lots smiling people in photos.

So far it seems like it's just something you do when you get your picture taken... like saying "cheese." I don't understand why I say cheese when I have my picture taken either. (shrug)

12:01am shopping

Today's *the* day. At the stroke of midnight I was able to redeem Gymbucks to purchase the Hanana Banana onesie that I've longed for. At 50% off $10.99, that's a pretty good deal. So, I bought it in three sizes so my little monkey will have one that fits for a long while, along with the matching bib and banket. Yes, I'm nuts. No wait, I'm bananas! I've learned that Gymboree clothes, especially items new with tags, sell well on eBay with mommies looking for discontinued styles. I can sell anything on eBay that Hannah doesn't end up wearing, and most likely sell it with a little profit. Robeez is discontinuing some shoe styles that I've really liked too, so Hannah has some shoes on the way too.

In preparing home for baby news, today we made plans at a local flooring store to install wood laminate flooring in the great room, hallways, and in the nursery. We're also installing vinyl that looks like tile in the kitchen, dining areas, and laundry room. I've really hated having carpet in our kitchen, and having a baby throwing food on the ground demands something that will clean up easily. Carpet in the kitchen can be so gross, especially when one accidentally dumps a pot of spaghetti sauce on the floor while cooking. The work starts tomorrow with the vinyl and continues with the wood laminate next week. We'll share photos as the work progresses.

Thanks to everyone who sent me get well messages for Sedona. The babydog is acting a lot more perky. My mom and dad came over last night, and Sedona was on our laps begging for ice cream. That's my girl! She wasn't wild about taking her medicine today, and we had to sneak it in between some treats. She's acting pretty normal right now, chewing on her smoked cow hoof (aka the dog pacifier) below my chair.

a stroller, a sick babydog, and a knitted poncho

Friday morning as I was hurriedly getting into my car to go to work, I saw my neighbors across the street setting up for a garage sale. I spied not one but two strollers in their driveway! I ran back inside and woke Kevin up. "Kevin, the neighbors are setting up for a garage sale and they have strollers. Get up quick before the sale starts and someone buys them! If you like one, buy it!" Now, take in mind Kevin is not a morning person... and does not wake up nicely. He's a grouchy bear! I was pleasantly surprised that Kevin rubbed his eyes, got dressed appropriately for 7:45am on a Saturday morning, and went over and checked them out. The neighbors had a single and a double. The momma neighbor teased Kevin and tried to get him to take the double too! When filling out immigration paperwork for our adoption, people often tell you to list 2 children so that way you can get a referral for twins if they come along. We very purposely wrote a 1 on our form so that there's no way we could be tempted into 2. One is all we can handle! If Sedona doggie gets tired of walking, there's plenty of room for her to ride in the bottom stroller basket.

The babydog is sick. Sedona had diarrhea and refused treats, even turkey lunchmeat. It's not like our little food obsessed licker to refuse any treat. Kevin took her to the vet while I was at work. We think she ate something she shouldn't have. She was given an antibiotic shot and 7 days of pills, along with instructions not to eat for 24 hours. She's allowed ice chips, that's it. When I got home from work, Sedona came to the door to greet me but didn't do the "I'm so happy to see you, let me lick you, pick me up!" happy dance that she does every day for me. My poor baby! Daddy's been taking good care of her all day.

Great Grandma Marjorie sent a gift home from Florida with Kevin. She knitted Hannah a poncho. Isn't that sweet? Thanks, Marjorie! It's beautiful.

Ni Hao, Kai-Lan - Premiers Monday, October 22

Nick Jr. has announced that Ni Hao, Kai-Lan will premier on Monday, October 22nd. I'm putting it on my calendar to remind Kevin to program the Tivo. We'll start saving episodes and burn them to a DVD for Hannah. I really hope it's a cute show!

Grass Jelly Drink

Last weekend when I went shopping with another Taiwan PAP (that's adoption lingo for pre-adoptive parent), I took her to an Asian grocery that I like to explore. We both chose some drinks from the refrigerator as it was a nice hot summer day. I picked out a can of "Chin Chin Grass Jelly Drink" because A) oh so weird! B) it was made in Taiwan and C) the jelly factor made me think it might be something like bubble/boba tea. Well, after we left the store we started girl talk and I half forgot about my drink and half was a little scared to try something that might turn out to be totally gross in front of someone I just met. So, I didn't open the drink. When I got home, I decided to save it for when Kevin got home from his trip. Yeah, make Kevin try it first!

Well, Kevin's home now and we broke out the grass jelly drink tonight. I wanted to video him tasting it for the first time, but he wouldn't let me. He took a few tips, proclaimed it tasted a little like sweet tea with gelatin, and then we poured it into a glass to check out the contents. It's really dark in color and kinda hard to see the little bits of diced gelatin until you get out a strainer. The can says that it's honey flavor. I don't taste honey, just a little sweetness in this tea drink with a little bit of a funny taste and bits of diced gelatin in the bottom of the can.

I googled grass jelly tonight, and learned that it's made by boiling leaves of the mint family with potassium carbonate and then cooling it to jelly like consistency.

Grass jelly drink is very interesting. Fun to taste test, but I think I'll stick with Fresca on ice as my refreshment of choice. Grass jelly isn't horrible as I feared. I promise.

Soybeans link Indiana with Taiwan

Tonight I'm googling the words Taiwan and Indiana and learned that Indiana exports a huge amount of food soybeans to Taiwan. Thanks, Taiwan, for buying my community's soybeans for your tofu!

Tagged, we're it.

I've been "tagged" twice in the last few days with people leaving comments on our blog. I'm not a big fan of chain letter type stuff, so I'll just half participate. I'll answer the questions but I'm not going to tag anyone else.

Here are the "rules," but obviously I'm considering them guidelines as I refuse to do numbers 4 & 5. I have to post these rules before I give you the facts. 2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves. 3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules. 4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. 5. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they have been tagged, and to read your blog.

Here are 8 random facts about us:

1. I play the penny whistle. Not well, but it's fun. I taught myself by reading about it online, listening to online clips of music, and I play sheet music I find on penny whistle websites. You can listen to a clip of one of my favorite tunes called Blackthorn Stick here, and here's what the sheet music looks like.

2. Kevin lived in my hometown for 1-2 years as an infant, and then moved away before I was born. Kinda neat that our families both lived in the same town, but just not at the same time.

3. I went to the suburbs of New Orleans for work a week after Hurricane Katrina. I went there for work, but I don't talk about my career on the blog to try and preserve my identity a bit. Anyway, I got to see some interesting sights (military men in intersections directing traffic with big rifles strapped to their shoulders) and met some residents with interesting stories. My favorite involves a woman that couldn't come to work that day because she was at home removing a dead horse that floated into her home and was deposited there after the water level went down.

4. Kevin lived in Germany for two years as a child while his father's National Guard status was activated. Kevin has a has a love for German Gummis. He lived in a town that had a gummi factory, and sometimes the air in the down even smelled of gummis. I took German in high school and spent a summer as an exchange student in Rinteln. My favorite chocolate will forever be Milka Noisette.

5. Kevin once worked at Disney's Magic Kingdom on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. While working as a mountain man he met many celebrities including Gwen Stefani, Shaq, Michael J. Fox, Harrison Ford, Jake Lloyd, Lorzenzo Lamas, Oprah, Fergie, and Rosie O'Donnell. Oh, and Cinderella in her bloomers.

6. Sedona is named after the most beautiful place I've ever been to... Sedona, Arizona. Sedona's paper name is Sedona Sunrise.

7. I'm a former 4-H Queen, crown and everything. I've had oiled pigs brush up against me in the ring while wearing pantyhouse. Wearing greasy mineral oiled pantyhouse makes one feel really attractive.

8. Kevin took his parents' car for a joy ride when he was 14 and wrecked.

love and lanterns are in the air

eBay is a source for wonderful things. I've been planning on hanging paper lanterns in Hannah Claire's nursery for a long time. I found some online stores that had several designs that are simply amazing, but tonight I found the lanterns I want on eBay. Here I could buy 10 for the price that I'd pay for 3 from a regular retail website. This way I won't have to worry about the lanterns falling down and breaking. I'll have backups!

When shopping for paper lanterns I found something else with the keyword "paper lanterns." Gymboree had a paper lanterns line of baby girl clothes! I found a gently used light yellow sundress complete with diaper cover with little paper lanterns in the pattern. Gymboree strikes again! Like I've said before, Gymboree can read my mind and knows my innermost baby clothes desires. It's scary! Maybe they have secret technology from the future and have scanned my brain? Uh oh. I think I've watching too much of that Star Trek that Kevin Tivos. Need more Mission Organization, less Star Trek! T minus 9 days until I can reedeem $25 in Gymbucks that are burning a hole in my wallet.

Poem: The Chosen Heart

Longing for a child to love,
I'd wish upon the stars above.
In my heart I always knew,
A part of me was meant for you.
I think how happy we will be,
Once I adopt you, and you adopt me.

I dream of all the joy you'll bring,
Imagining even the littlest things.
The way it will feel to hold you tight,
And tuck you in every night.
The drawings on the refrigerator door,
And childhood toys across the floor.
The favorite stories read again and again,
And hours of games with make-believe friends.

The day you took my outstretched hand,
A journey ended, but our lives began.
Still mesmerized by your sweet face,
Still warmed inside by our first embrace.
I promised to give you a happy home,
And a loving family all your own.
A house you've now made complete,
With laughter, smiles, and tiny feet.

A parent is one who guides the way,
Know I will be there everyday.
Rest easy as each night you sleep,
A lifetime of love is yours to keep.

Longing for a child to love,
I'd wish upon the stars above.
In my heart I always knew,
A part of me belonged to you.

Taiwan Express - lucky day for shopping

This cutie shirt was the deal of the day, with 25% off already reduced 50% off. I've had my eye on that print for awhile. Sedona's lambie thinks it's pretty cute too.

Independence Day - freedom to shop

It's not much fun around the house with Kevin gone visiting his family for two weeks. In celebration of my country's Independence Day, I'll exercise a little freedom to shop. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington would agree, right? I hear they had a thing for zebra print, too.

families are stitched together by God in many patterns

I've been thinking and praying a lot about the different ways families are formed. Our family's future is being stitched together by God through birth family, social workers, loving nannies, governments, judges, and notaries. Thank you to every one who is helping us and praying for us down the road to grow a family.

AGENCY UPDATE: 2-4 more months

Today I received the e-mail from our agency that I've been waiting for. The conservative estimate is that it will be two to four more months for our referral of a healthy infant girl. The storks have been delivering a lot of baby boys lately, so the "blue list" has been moving much more quickly than the "pink list." This news is pretty much exactly what I expected to hear.

Adoptive families often say that you get news about your adoption when you're traveling. Kevin left yesterday on a two week trip. I can't reach his cell phone, so he doesn't even know of the update yet. Figures, right? We'll be taking a trip to Texas to visit family in September. Maybe our referral will come while we're in Texas!?!? We'll have to make sure Kevin's cell phone is charged and ready for "the call" at all times.

Lonely Planet Video on Taipei, Taiwan

Click here to watch a video on Taipei, Taiwan, that's pretty good! I wasn't sure about stinky tofu... but I'll try it if this guy says it's really good, even if it smells like boiled sweat socks.

Bubble Tea

I first heard of Bubble Tea (also called Boba tea) while reading a Taiwan adoption blog. (Obviously, I do a lot of that nowadays.) Anyway, I've always wanted to try it, and decided to order an at home kit that we'll make when we celebrate our referral. Never heard of bubble tea or boba tea before?
According to Wikipedia: Bubble tea is a tea beverage that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. The term "bubble" refers to the tapioca balls in the drink. These chewy tapioca balls, or "pearls," are consumed along with the beverage through a wide straw. Bubble tea is extremely popular in Asia, California, and Canada.
I've purchased two bubble tea kits, one for our family, and one for the gift basket for the winner in our "guess our referral date" game. That way, you can celebrate along with us from wherever you are. You'll have everything you need for a little bubble tea party: flavored mixes, two kids of tapioca balls, special cups, and wide straws.

Speaking of "wherever you are," I've been using Google Analytics on our blog for the last two weeks. It's fascinating to see that hits come from around the world. I've had hits from every continent except Antarctica. Cousin Jackie in the Peace Corps in Botswana helped take care of a hit from Africa. In the last two weeks I've had hits from 40 of 50 states. Even the the District of Colombia contributed hits. Yes, it's a small small world.

my dreams have wings - Gymboree indulgences

Sigh. These are beautiful, especially the yellow outfit with water lillies and lilly pads. Whoever does the marketing at Gymboree is a genius. Now I have Gymbucks to buy the Hannah banana onesie. Just waiting for the sale.

I called our agency this week. All families are supposed to be getting updates soon. I've read on message boards that there's been a lot of infant boy referrals lately. That could push our time line back a little bit. We'll see. The waiting stage now is fine. I'm sure it's much worse for families after referral when you have those baby pictures and just want to hop on an airplane now to go see her/him and kiss those sweet baby cheeks.

I read an adoption blog today for a family that is just starting with our agency. The family reports that the wait for an infant girl has grown to 18 months. Wow. I know that there were a lot of families choosing our agency right after us, but I had no idea that there were that many. This news makes me even more eager for our update. Makes me glad that we jumped in line when we did.

4 month mark

Woah. Yesterday I didn't even realize that it was the four month mark of waiting for a referral. I think that's a good sign! Here's my four month mark scrapbook page with Sedona's thoughts of waiting for a referral. She'd really like this process to hurry up so we can focus lots more on Hannah Claire and less on the constant "no licks" reminders. We went out do dinner with friends tonight and had the couple over for Wii bowling in our living room. I feel much better about waiting right now then I did last month. I think I'm getting used to saying... no news... but when there is news... EVERYONE will know! And, the Monkey Island line is still full price at Gymboree... but I may have cheated with the Tiny Pond line. I couldn't resist dragonflies and water lilies cuteness any longer at 40% off.

still time left in the "guess our referral date" game

The polls will close at midnight this Monday, June 25th in the "guess our referral date" game. I've made a calendar that you can click on to see where everyone's guesses fall. Just click on the image to see a larger size. I'll post a picture of the prize after the polls close... but let's just say it contains a bottle of wine and other food goodies from Indiana, and a children's book with a Taiwan theme. Something for adults and little ones! If you can't figure out how to post a message in the comments section (That's you, Dana! *haha*), then send me an e-mail at journeytohannahclaire@gmail.com and I'll add your date to the calendar. Locals can just tell me at work too. You know where to find me at work this weekend!

no licks!

"No licks!" is a phrase that you'll hear around our house a lot these days. We're trying to break Sedona of her licking obsession. She doesn't lick herself, just people. She'll lick your toes, your face, your ankle, your hand, and even the pillow that you sleep on because it smells like you. If you lay down on the floor, she thinks it's time for a "lick fest" and that you laid down just so that she could lick you all over. I really don't want our baby learning to crawl, walk, etc. to be subjected to these "lick fests." Sedona is really a good little dog, minus the never ending supply of kisses. We're just too well loved by our dog. Suggestions welcome.

the wiener dogs next door and fun with little girls

Our next door neighbors have four wiener dogs. Well, they did have four daschunds until yesterday when Moo their long-haired had four puppies, three girls and a boy... now totaling eight wiener dogs under one roof. Moo's a first time mother and freaked out a little bit when she went into labor, but those mothering instincts kicked in full gear between delivering puppy 1 and puppy 2. She cleaned them all up and is very protective, growling when the other adult dogs come near their pen. Moo hates going outside to do her business, wanting back into the house and back to her babies right now! What's really interesting is that Annabelle, one of the other dogs, is pregnant too. Annabelle has a huge belly, and should be due in a few weeks. Annabelle wants Moo's babies. Annabelle would steal them if she could... wanting to run off with Moo's babies and mother them. What do breeding wiener dogs have to do with adoptions from Taiwan? I'm not sure... but I found their behavior pretty interesting! I haven't started barking at other people's children wanting to carry them off in my mouth... yet. And if you know anyone that wants a daschund puppy, let me know!

We went out to dinner last week with a family with two cuties from China, ages 4 and 5. The little girls wanted to go to the local Chinese buffet. We discovered that both of our families are very fortunate to developed great friendships with the owner, Susan. My favorite parts of the evening involved talking with their youngest. She told me, "I like Tigers! Roarrrrrr!" and showed me her tiger claws. I asked the girls if they helped their mommy out at home. Here's the reply: "Yes." What do you do? "We polish the floors." Oh, really? Do you do them by hand or help mommy with a machine? She gives me a funny look and replies, "We don't use our hands, we use a cloth!"

Father's Day... continued

Happy Father's Day, especially for the new dad's out there that are waiting to travel to their children. Kevin and I spent tonight with my family to celebrate my dad. I'm still thinking about what a great dad Kevin is going to be. Here's some pictures of Kevin with his niece Isobella from 2003. My travel goal for this summer is to arrange for some time off work to fly to Texas to see this cutie. She's growing up so fast into a little lady that starts Kindergarten this fall. I don't have any new pictures to share, so I'm scrapbooking old favorites for now.

100th post: for Kevin, daddy to be

I would like to dedicate the 100th post of our adoption blog to my husband and best friend, Kevin. You're going to be such a great dad to our child. Sedona and I love you!

Game: Guess our referral date!

Just for fun, let's play a guessing game. Let's have a contest where we guess what date Kevin and I will get our referral call. Just to clarify, this phone call/e-mail will be the first contact where we hear that we've been matched. If pictures and additional information come on a later date, the date that counts is when we first hear that we're matched.
In order to play, just post a date as a comment to this post with the date that you've selected as the big day. If you don't have a blogger account, be sure you leave your name and e-mail address. I will send a special care package prize to the person who selects the closest date. Entries must be submitted in the next two weeks, by June 25th. No cash value, and need not be present to win. (joke) I'll e-mail you to let you know that you've won, and to get your snail mail (real) address to send you your prize.

We spent the afternoon cleaning out the garage. Kevin and I are trying to purge... getting rid of things we don't need to make room for fun things like stroller and tricycles. Both of our allergies are acting up and we're sneezy, itchy, watery-eyed messes. Pass the Benadryl, please.

Gymboree is like crack for mommies

I read this statement on someone's mommy blog this week: "Gymboree is like crack for mommies." At that time, I thought that was really funny! It's not so funny anymore. I think the people at Gymboree can read my mind. Those evil people must have scanned my brain searching for my innermost baby clothes desires, and they masterminded something just for me in PINK, BANANA, and MONKEY. Arg!!!!! Why do they taunt me with such cuteness? Do they know that I'm being a good girl, attending Baby Clothes Anonymous meetings three times a week, and have been successful in keeping my credit card in check this past month? This is so unfair. See for yourselves...

This is it, the Hannah Banana onesie. Well, Gymboree calls it Monkey Island - Tropical Monkey bodysuit, but I know it's really the Hannah Banana onesie that they made just for me. It's inevitable that anyone named Hannah will be called "Hannah Banana", right? How many words can you think of that rhyme with Hannah? I've been wanting some clothing with bananas on it too. Even better... my dad used to turn my plain white 70s disposable diapers into my "monkey pants" with little Sharpie marker and a whole lot of humor. I have a feeling that Grandpa Roy still has talent to make more pairs of monkey pants for Hannah Claire.

For the record, I'm still clean and have resisted the temptations that Gymboree has offered me this morning. The Hannah Banana onesie is still full price. But, when the Monkey Island line starts hitting the sale prices, I'm not sure how long I can hold out.

a prayer for our daughter

May you be safe and sleep soundly through the night.
May you be safe as you wake to the morning's light.
May you feel our love from so far away,
May it comfort and protect you throughout each day.
We will pray for you my little one,
Until our time of waiting is done.
We will pray that the Lord keep you safe from harm,
Until the child of our hearts becomes the child in our arms.
--Anonymous

I've been thinking a lot about our daughter... at the stop light, as I lie in bed trying to go to sleep at night, and as I pull grassy weeds that creep into the mulch. Has she been born into this world? It's likely... but maybe not quite yet. I look at cans of formula at the grocery store and wonder what kind she's eating... milk based, soy? Does she have reflux and spit up a lot? What does her birth name mean? What things do her nannies whisper into her ear and sing to her as they comfort her cries?

baby carrier research

I've been reading about baby carriers this week, and all sorts of good things about "baby wearing" to help in the attachment when baby comes home. I have two styles picked out, a sling and a mei tai. For those of you with baby carrier experience, let me know what kind of carriers you like, don't like, and why.

These slings are at Monkeybuckets. I've been looking for a good site that makes slings for awhile. Thanks to Andrea for the link. My favorite fabric sample is this pink and brown mod flowered pattern.

I'm really excited about the mei tais at BabyHawk. I've read from lots of parents that they like them because they distribute the baby's weight over a larger area and that they're easy to unwrap when putting down a sleeping baby. This site has oodles of fabric choices. My first fabric choice is this red Asian flowered print. Without telling Kevin what I liked, I had him take a look, and he chose the same red flowered print! How cool is that? Even better, BabyHawk mei tais also can be made reversible so you can have two fabric choices. Now, how cool is that??? I think I'll pick out a mod geometric print for the other side. They also can add pockets to stuff a few diapers in, and loops for baby toys. Obviously I'm pretty excited about these.
