5 months

We're at the 5 month mark today. The waiting has gotten easier and easier lately. I think it's gotten easier for several reasons: the answer to my prayers, from the support we've gotten from family and friends in our local community and Taiwan adoption community, and of course the growing pile of "retail therapy" from Gymboree helps me smile and think about fun things to come.

Isaiah 40:31 - Inspiration for Waiting Families
"But those who wait on the LORD will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint." I got a lot of inspiration from this Adoption and Fire blog post this morning. It is a must read for pre-adoptive waiting families.

Kevin and I cleaned out the junk room... er... the nursery tonight in preparation for the wood laminate flooring installation to continue bright and early tomorrow morning. I'll have more pictures soon, of course.

  2. Happy 5 months! I hope the rest of your wait goes quickly. I don't know anyone else who is adopting from Taiwan, so I am looking forward to following your story. What's the average wait time for adoptions from Taiwan?

  3. Wendy,
Taiwan adoptions are not centralized like China. The US adoption agency works with an orphanage in Taiwan to place children. There are programs where the birthmother chooses the adoptive parents, programs where the orphanage matches, and programs where the agency matches. There are programs where children are in fostercare as well as orphanage care. After matching, the orphanage starts the adoption court case in Taiwan... and it takes a while... sometimes 5-8 months after referral until the court case is done and everything is all set for travel. Families do not travel in a travel group, but usually only have to stay for a minimum of 5 days. Way different than China, right?

  4. Wow that's interesting Sarah! Definitely a different system. How long does it usually take to get matched?

  5. Wendy, It differs from program to program... mostly depending on the age of the child you would like to adopt. For healthy infants, it depends on many families your agency and/or the orphanage already has in their queue. Some programs say six months to referral, and there are others were families have already waited more than 18 months and the wait times are only going up. So, there's no easy answer to your question.
