Crib Poll - drop down or stationary?

The cribs we've looked at have a stationary side. I worry about being able to scoop baby up when the mattress is all the way down. What do the rest of you shorties with crib experience have to say about the matter?

  1. I'm 5'5'' and use the drop down feature all the time. (I also have a bad back, though.)

  2. I am 5'4" and have a drop down..but it wakes her up so I have used it only a couple of times..I just sling her in LOL

Seriously, I wish I'd gone stationary..my friend has one that has a little hing on top...LOVE that one...it only opens a little at the top

  3. I am 5'6 but you would really want the drop down side (just always remember to put it back up!). It really makes it easier. Plus you can take the side off and use the crib as a toddler bed most times when they are about three.

  4. 5'6" here. With all three of our kids, I never used the drop down option. Unless it is absolutely silent, it isn't worth it. We had the kind that slid up and down, not the hinging kind. I don't really know how they're made now as we bought our last crib 7 1/2 years ago. But, when the matress needs to be all the way down is when the child can stand. So, at that point, they are helping you retrieve them by standing with arms up. If the crib you like more is stationary, I would say that it isn't a big deal. But, Andrea has a good point about the toddler bed option. Hmmmm.

  5. I'm 5'11" with fairly long arms and appreciate the drop down side. No bad back or anything but sometimes when I'm "hovering" or just hanging there trying to get her back to sleep, the long reach over the side puts my arms to sleep.

There's a trick to getting it to lock in the up position quietly enough that it won't wake her. Took some practice but she sleeps through the "clunk" noise now.

  6. I'm 5'7 1/2" and Brody's crib has a stationary side. Not exactly the best thing when you have a bad back and he's not cooperating with getting out of bed. If I had that decision to make over again, I would have definitely gone with a movable side.

  7. I'm 5'5" and always use the drop down. Even when she's asleep, I put her in it, slide it up, it clicks and doesn't seem to bother her. Joe does not use the drop down and if he leaves it up, I physically cannot get her in there if she's sleeping without waking her up. Way too hard.

Have fun shopping whatever you decide!

  8. Ok... Im a lot late adding to these great comments but here you go. I've never used a drop down so I dont know the difference. (5'7", sometimes bad back:) Kobi's crib converts into a full size sleigh bed but he's chewed it so badly that we wont be using it once he can fall out of it. LOL! Good luck choosing! Oh & I never bought a changing table either. Other moms may totally disagree but I use a pad on the floor. The rug blew my budget at the time/ my husband would have killed me if I came home with a changing table too... LOL!
