checkup for the not so big girl

weight - 16 pounds 4 ounces
length - 28 3/4 inches
head circumference - 44.6cm

Hannah had a well child visit this morning at the peds clinic and got some shots. Ears and lungs clear, just a boogery cold. I was excited to get Hannah weighed as I thought that she might have gained a lot of weight as she's been eating so well this past month. Unfortunately, the scale doesn't show the huge improvement. We'll keep doing a Pediasure a day. I had hoped to be able to take a bloggable photo today with Hannah's arms raised up over her head titled "big girl" documenting significant weight gain. Instead I have a post-vaccination fussy baby down for a nap. I try not to worry, but can't help charting out her growth and obsessing a little. Sigh. The mama in me wants what's best for her, but the adoptive mother worries about living up to expectations of everyone else (social workers, adoption agency reps, orphanage workers, and birthfamily) that has had a hand in her life before us. And I worried about lack of weight gain while in orphanage care?

For Grandma in FL who asked this morning about what size Hannah's wearing: Mostly 9 months. She's getting too long for 6 month jammies and long pants. I forsee a future with only adjustable waist pants. We have some 9 month elastic waist (not adjustable) jean and khaki shorts from Target that are still too big in the waist and slide down.

I just hope she'll outgrow the rear facing car seat by the time she gets her driving permit. Ha ha.

Here's the scrap pages for our next adoption post placement report that is in the works. I'm really thankful for the opportunity to take all of those photos in mirror last week as they just let her little personality shine through.

  1. She is a precious little peanut! To make you feel better, my now 4 year old is just 28 pounds and 35 7/8 inches... 3rd percentile and has been there or below her whole life. Gotta love our petite princesses!

Where did you get the plottable growth chart?

  2. Hi Sarah, it may not be my place to compare and I know that my daughters weren't adopted...but I wanted to encourage you a bit as far as Hannah Claire's progress goes. Both of our daughters were premature and neither of them caught up to the expected measurements until they were two. I can't remember if I've ever posted a comment to this effect here or not. But Kennedy still wore 6 month clothes at a year old and was tiny. Sydney's head was in like the 90th percentile {lol!} but neither their height nor weight was even on the growth chart until age 2! So hang in there, sweet mama! I bet she'll catch up! And you're doing a great job! I realize you want to be pro-active...but don't despair! Again, I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds here.

    She is lovely~

  3. Don't worry about it. I worried myself silly and my pediatrician kept saying she needed to gain until about 15 months and then he said, well I've come to a conclusion. I was ready for the floor to give way, thinking she had something serious! He said, she is just going to be little! She will be 3 on the 29th and weighs 22 pounds. She can still wear 6-9 month shorts/capris. She is tiny, but she's healthy, happy and has lots of lovins!!!!

  4. Shots suck. I always hate that part. Try not to worry about the weight thing. She's tiny but she sure looks like a healthy little girl to me. And VERY happy. You guys are doing a great job.

  5. Try not to fret about her size (I know that is hard). My bio daughter (who was not a preemie like Hannah) is small too. She's 12 months old and in 9 month clothing. And she has feet so tiny it's crazy - she's only just in size 2 shoes now! Some kids are just small. If she's healthy, that's all that matters.

  6. Don't worry too much about her weight. Logan was a preemie (3.6 lbs) and came home at 5.5 months old weighing only 9 lbs. He wasn't one the chart until he turned three! The doc. said as long as he's on a upward curve that's ok. He still is very thin and small for his age. At his four yr check up in Jan. he only weighed 34 lbs. We joke he will be in a car seat when he turns 16! He is healthy (apart from the occasional asthma act up), strong, and happy. On a side note last summer when he was 3.5 yrs old he wore a size 18 month swim trunks!

  7. Sarah, I found a growth chart online by googling "children growth chart," saved the image, opened it up in photoshop, and then used the brush to place dots on the points I wanted to plot. After I placed the dots I saved the graphic again and then hosted the graphic online so I could link to it. Hope that makes sense!

  8. i know how you feel!
My little one is tiny too, and has been all the time. Her height is kind of avergage but her weight is not (she's 2and 3 month and 10.4kg). i worried for a long time until a dr said, she's healthy and on target...don't worry.
So i try not to. pediasure sure can help...make you feel better if nothing else!

  9. She might be tiny, but she sure looks mighty! You can tell she's healthy one and that is all that matters. Love her little spunky smirks! Totally cracks me up!
    See you guys Saturday.

  10. She is more beautiful each time I get a chance to check out your blog! What and angel I love those chubby cheeks. FYI Kimi was 32" and weighed 19lbs @20mos she is still super skinny and only gained 6lbs in 17mos she has been home. How do we fatten up these Taiwan girls???? She looks so happy too.

  11. Andrew is not much older or bigger than Hannah. He's 16 months, not quite 19 pounds, and can wear his wardrobe from last summer of 6-9 months clothes. He's been with us for 10 months, eats very well and still drinks some formula in addition to whole milk. I, too, have expected a "growth spurt" and it hasn't happened. My pediatrician is not concerned about Andrew's rate of growth or his size (like I am). She says he's healthy and destined to be very, very petite.

  12. She is changing so much! I like the laughter picture too. Don't worry about her weight-I did with our daughter and it didn't help anything. Our ped/MD told us she will eat when she is ready. They were right (she was malnur/failure to thrive)and she is a petite teenager now and smart as a whip! She never was 'on the line' (growth chart) but followed that curve right along. It's easier said than done, but don't worry too much! Hope everyone feels better soon so you can get outside for more sun & fun! And pictures too :-)

  13. Ben turned 3 in December (so he is now 41 months) and we just recently celebrated a milestone: 18 month pants! This is quite a change from when he was 2 and in 6 month pants :) We also just found out that his soon to be adopted 2 year old sister is WAY bigger than he is. So, I guess they are what they are and you just go on.

Stick with your intuition...if you know she is eating well and getting the attention she needs then she is just fine. If not, trust your gut and take her to the doctor again. Mother's intuition is usually right.

  14. Oh those pictures are beautiful! Sounds like Hannah's got an inch on Aiden and he has about 2 pounds on her- our little peanuts!
