Ding Ding Pharmacy

This post is mostly for other families adopting from Taiwan.

Before going home from Taiwan, I wanted to stock up on Hannah's formula (enough to get us through until her first appointment at an international adoption clinic) and extra pacifiers that were the same as the single pacifier she came to us with. I've heard of other adoptive families anguish when their Taiwan pacifier broke or became misplaced, and their child rejected multiple American style pacifiers.

Upon the recommendations of my adopting friends Judy and KB, we went to the Ding Ding Pharmacy in Taipei. It was a short taxi ride away from our hotel, the Grand Hyatt Taipei. I'd certainly want to take a taxi and not try to take a bus or the MRT, as I knew that our hands would be full carrying shopping bags with multiple cans of formula and other goodies that would hop into our cart.

I printed out the taxi card to Ding Ding available on Judy's old blog (click here for link). Because we went on New Year's Eve, we had someone at the concierge desk at our hotel call the store to make sure they were open. Our hotel's staff told us that they're open until 11:45pm every night. The staff checked the taxi card, and said that the only thing it's missing is that it doesn't say that the store is on the second floor. Uh... I don't think the taxi is going to take us up the stairs, but thanks. Heehee.

Here's a shot of me with Hannah in the baby carrier ready to find her some formula and pacifiers.

This is what the outside of the store looked like.

We took the elevator up to the second floor. Walking up stairs with a baby strapped to your front and you can't see your feet isn't fun.

The store was much larger than I thought it was going to be. Guess I got used to stores being much smaller in Taiwan, except for Carrefour and department stores. The store seemed like a cross between a Babies R Us and an a CVS or Walgreens. The product mix was definately focused on infants and toddlers. Here you could find baby clothes, diapers, formula, bottles, nipples, pacifiers, cups, spoons, baby chopsticks, strollers, cribs, medications, etc.

Here's the formula section. Hannah is on a Wyeth formula called S-26 SMA Gold for 0-6 months of age. The can says that it is made in Singapore, but Wyeth is an international company. I haven't been able to figure out if there is an exact equivalent for the product sold by Wyeth in the United States. I'm not worried about it. I'll just let the international adoption clinic do their stuff and tell us what they suggest at our upcomming appointment. We have plenty of formula to last until then.

There were at least three sections of pacifiers. Hannah's pacifier is one piece of molded silicone and has a long thinner nipple. The only markings on it said "US baby." We searched through the pacifiers and found ones that looked like hers and they said that they were made by a company called US baby (click for link), but were made in Taiwan. Pretty funny! There were a few sizes of the same pacifier. We popped Hannah's pacifier out of her mouth and held it up next to the pacifiers in the packages, and then had a staffer confirm that the pacifiers were the same.

They had all sorts of cute pacifier keepers. Of course Hannah went home with this Hello Kitty one! It even has a storage section inside the Hello Kitty head to keep it clean when not in use. We also got a pink Hello Kitty stacking formula dispenser that holds enough formula for four bottles. I carry it in the diaper bag.

And who couldn't resist a set of baby chop sticks? We got Hannah the training set with the frogs on them to the right.

One last thing. Don't bother with packing oodles of diapers to bring to Taiwan. Waste of valueable suitcase space! I had read other parents' complaining that the diapers that they bought in Taiwan had the old pastic non-adjustable sticky tabs and they wished they had brought diapers with the velcro-like tabs in the US. Upon the recommendation of Megan's daddy Kevin, we purchased a pack of a brand of diapers called Merries while in Taiwan. They had a regular kind and premium, and we purchased the premiums and they worked wonderfully wicking away our little piddlemonster's peepee and had the nice velcro-tabs for newbie parents trying to figure out how tightly to fasten a diaper around a wiggleworm. We bought our Merries at Carrefour, but also saw them at the Ding Ding Pharmacy.

I have enjoyed following your trip, and I'm glad you made it home safe.
    What a lucky happy family!
I started to watch your gotcha video. It was very touching. I couldn't get very far before the waterworks started. I could feel all your emotions from the pictures. I'll go back and watch the rest later, on a better day.
I'm so happy for your guys!!!
I appreciate your kind comments, thanks.

  4. Mel, We brought 3 of our own bottles as I feel pretty strongly about using BPA free products. We're using Born Frees. Anyway, SLC gave us 2 bottles for Hannah, but when we went to use one for the first time, it was cracked and leaked all of the place. Having four bottles was plenty. I forget where you're staying. At the Hyatt they brought us a bottle steralizer when they realized that we had a baby with us. Be sure that you have the hotel staff teach you how to use the hot pot if you can't figure it out. Having lots of hot clean water is a must.

  5. yea.. i agreed with having lots of hot water is a must since we cant drink the water directly from tap there.. S26 in singapore.. used to be a popular brand during my time as most hospitals feed newborn with this brand.. for now i cant be sure as my god childrens takes dumex..

  6. Ding Ding Pharmacy rocks. I think we need to petition them to open a chain in America.

  7. Thank you. We're using MAM bottles and I love/ed them.
Yeah, I'm a bit worried about the hot clean water issue and always wondered how other parents have dealt with it. Do you know what water they used at SLC? Did they just boil their faucet water or did they use bottled water and heated that up?

  8. Sarah,
Is that all you really bought?... with the looks of that store I think I would of come home with alot more!

  9. Mel, I don't know what they use at SLC, but I'd assume boiled. In the hotel we used hot pot water, dissolved the formula in, and then added bottled water. We didn't use the bottled because we thought it was better... but becasue it was room temp and easy. We stayed in three different hotel rooms during our journey, and each gave us 2-4 containers of bottled water per day.

  10. Oh... and it was difficult for us to remember to WASH bottles in the hot pot water only. A day later we found out that the hotel had a bottle steralizer and were very happy to use that and not have to worry so much.

  13. Tiffanie, Silly! You just needed to put out an APB to your adoption friends saying where can I find formula?!?!? like you did when you posted for someone call my husband NOW and tell him to skype with me!!!!! Heehee. I'm sorry that you had problems... but it was a little funny to think about your husband getting all of these phone calls from strange women telling him to get home and call his wife NOW.

  14. Thank you so much Sarah!!
My husband and I are addicted to your blog and I told him we were printing them all out and putting them in a folder for our personal guide to Taiwan. You could teach a class. When that glorious day comes, I will feel so prepared.

Thanks again for taking the time to write this all out. This is so kind and helpful.

  15. Wow, I loved that informative post! And of course your baby girl just adds to the joy...beautiful!
We just received our Final Ruling, so I took careful notes! :)
The Taiwan pacifiers are considered GOLD by the families who have already traveled & I've heard much about the Merries too!
BUT the chopstick trainers were new and those will be a must!

I'm adding the Ding Ding to our list of places to go! Thank you!!
So glad you are home with your sweet Miss and that all is blissful....okay, maybe jet-lagged too? :) All worth it!

  16. Hey - Glad the Merries worked for you. They seemed to be sized to fit a wide range of bottom sizes to we really had to cinch them down on Meg but they worked.

Also, for everyone's reference sake (because you definitely could use this blog as a "Not So Lonely Planet Guide" ;-)), the Ding Ding pharmacy you went to is the one I put on your map a few weeks ago.

    Cheers and get some sleep.

  17. Kevin, Something's up with our Google Map and everything we put on it was wiped clean. Kevin had it set so that anyone could add markers. I hope that it's some kind of internet glitch and that some meanie didn't go in and delete them all for spite. Anyway, Kevin thinks he somehow has the markers saved somewhere and is going to try to recreate our Google Map.

  18. Okay... I'm going to live at Ding Ding... you all can just call me Ding Ding now... or just Ding bat. Anyways, I'm going to seriously stock up on trainer chopsticks! How cute are they!?

  19. Oh shoot. That was a great map. I'd be glad to go back and add what I had put there earlier if he can't restore it.
