How long until ATIN arrives?

Question: Anyone *recently* apply for an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) with the IRS? Their web site says it usually takes 4-8 weeks to arrive, but what have the time frames been recently? I did my taxes tonight and I'm chomping at the bit to file, but need the ATIN number to do it. Reality: Travel expenses in Taiwan and being off work for five weeks have maxed out the credit card. We're fine, but I'm looking forward to the adoption tax credit to wipe away the temporary debt.

I've applied for a ATIN for Hannah Claire as I don't have our Certificate of Citizenship back yet, and I want to do our taxes now and not wait until we have a social security number for her. I'd like to apply for her SSN after readoption is finished so that her number will be issued in her adoptive name rather than her current legal name.

As long as I'm asking questions of you... if anyone has post requests our questions for me, feel free to ask away in the comments section of this post.

REAL LIFE started today as it was my first day back at work. I didn't peek in the nursery before I left because a) I didn't want to wake her b) I didn't want to get emotional and start crying and c) no time! I'm always so close to running late for work and always show up within 1-2 minutes of when I absolutely have to be there. It went fine. No tears, just tired feet from standing all day. I think Kevin was glad to get rid of me and be home with Hannah Claire all day after he took his mother to the airport, and I was glad to be back. Spending FIVE WEEKS TOGETHER with one's spouse 24 hours a day can be taxing on a marriage! I've been a grouch with Kevin the last two weeks. Sorry, honey. Please forgive me. I promise I'll be better.

  1. When we came home with Alea (Jan 1), her new name was on her new birth certificate, Visa and Passport. All I had to do was take her passport and birth certificate ( I think I also to took the final adoption decree) to Social Security office and we got her card within 2 weeks. That is all we needed for taxes. Her SS card has her name as we chose it. We did not get an Adoption Taxpayer Id number. Our taxes were filed by Feb 2!! So, I'm not much help on your ??? but if you didn't want to wait 4-8 weeks, you could do as we did.

Glad first day went ok for Mommy, Daddy and Hannah. I remember leaving Braylen for the first time to go back to work part time and I cried the whole morning!!

  2. It has been a few years now, but when we applied for an ID for our daughter I remember receiving it fairly quickly - within 4 weeks. Hope you get it soon. I know what you mean about the adoption tax credit!

  3. Okay- I guess the real question is "How did Kevin do?" He lost his wife and mother on the same day?! Brave man to fly solo with HC so quickly. I'm certain you were less emotional knowing that she was with Daddy and not in daycare.

I hadn't heard of the ATIN. Good to know. Our adoption won't be final in India (they do guardianship and re-adopt in the US), so I was wondering how we'd do taxes unless we were able to re-adopt before taxes are due in 2010.

Hope you get answers soon. I know that all of us want the tax credit- it does make a difference!

  4. I know you think it might be a pain to get the SS card reissued, but it is so easy. And if you go in person to apply, within 24 hours you have their number. So, if you really want to get it fast, that might be the way to go.

  5. We also just did the SS card in both kids birth names for taxes, we got the SS card within a week. After their re-adoption we got their new BC's in two months and then went back to the SS office and got their names changed. It was a lot easier for us. Especially with Ava-we came home Feb. 6, went to the SS office had a SS card a week later and had a taxes done two weeks after we were home.

  7. Thanks for the reminder, cuz I don't think our daughter has her adopted name on her SS card.

    Okay, here's my questions:

Where did you get that gold dress? It is so beautiful! (And so is the wearer!)

What are Hannah's stats? In some pictures she looks so tiny, in other so big!

Was her one year photo done at the Picture People?

Where are the hemo-whatevers you were talking about? You've posted a ton o pictures and I don't think I've seen a one. They might be the same thing my cousins had as babies--mainly on their bellies and necks, and they went away on their own by the time they were 2 or 3. Never caused any problems with them.

    Where are her teeth!!?

Is Kevin working from home and watching Hannah or just watching Hannah?

    Okay, there's my set-o-questions!!

Congratulations again!! SHe truly is one of the cutest babies I have seen in blogdom!!

    She is a living doll!!

  8. We were told by our SW to NOT apply for a SSN until after re-adoption. The reason being that in our state the SS workers will issue non-citizen numbers to adoptive children unless they have a US birth certificate. (Despite having the adoption paperwork for some reason the workers in our state can't quite figure this out, even when you TELL them...) We did our readoption paperwork in Sept. and still don't have the US Birth Cert. because apparently a process which used to take 6 weeks is now taking 3-6 months. HUH? Anywho...told you all that simply to say that we've elected to just not file until we have his SSN, even if it means filing for an extension. Which totally doesn't help YOU at all because you'd like your $$ ASAP! (We really want ours, too, but that's another story.)

Hmmm...guess I'm not any help at all, sorry!

  9. WOW, I'm of no help here and I'm sorry. Kind of funny actually, because I just asked Chris if he has said anything to our accountant about adopting Allie this year and he said uh, no was I supposed to? Hmmmm, yes Hon I think that would be a good idea! LOL, I guess we better get our ducks in a row!
Glad to hear that work went well and that Miss Hannah and Daddy were able to hold down the fort for ya! How is the other baby girl holding up? Let us know!

  10. We actually just waited and applied for Reed's SSN after the readoption was finalized, but it came in less than 2 weeks. I would think the same would be true for HC's ATIN. We completely know all about that tax credit needs to pay off the credit cards scenario!

  11. We just went ahead and got Chaislyn's social security card, Doug went to, my memory is failing here, whatever building in our State's Capitol and just filled some things out and we had it pretty quickly. They gave it to us with her US name and everything. We have not done a readoption yet, that was 2 yrs ago.

  12. Oh the dreaded "real life". I feel for ya:) Its hard at first but gets better. Kobi's ATIN took from Jan 07'-Apr 07'... however that was 2 years ago and we had a LOT of hold ups. So hopefully yours will come much quicker. I feel for you guys cause its so wonderful to have a December "Gotcha Day" but murder on the paperwork (tax wise)Trust me adult interaction (minus the hubby) is much needed when you have a one year old. No offense guys:)

Good Luck with the tax #!

  13. Julie,

The gold dress is from H&M, along with matching gold shoes. I bought them in two sizes... size 2 and 3, so she can wear the dress and shoes for a looong time. It's 6-9 months... and 4-6 months fits her just right.

Hannah is about 15 and a half pounds.

The one year photo was done at the Picture People.

I've decided not to post about where her hemangiomas are at this time, but may change my mind later. The problem is that when one has multiple hemangiomas rather than just one or two, they are at greater risk for having internal ones.

    Teeth... heehee. They'll come!

Kevin is the ultimate cool stay at home dad. He may pick up a few jobs from people from time to time, but he's not looking.
