twice initiated

I was initiated into motherhood twice tonight. I tried to be a good mommy and fed her baby prunes for dinner to keep the poo poo coming. An hour or so later I was enjoying a dessert with a little whipped cream on top. Hannah was watching me eat intently. I decided to put a pea sized amount into her mouth to see what she'd do, as I've been trying to decide if I'm actually going to let her put any cake and/or ice cream in her mouth at her birthday party. She looked at me in horror with the bit of whipped cream in her mouth, moving her tongue all around. A few seconds later she made herself gag, and all of the prunes came up all over my brand new green shirt, all over her jammies, on my pants, in her hair, etc etc etc. I was horrified, all alone with baby puke while Kevin and his mom were at the grocery. I stripped us both down, put us in the shower, and cried a little while I held her and washed her hair.

Tonight after spending half an hour trying to put her to sleep, she got really mad, worked herself up into a royal screaming "mad baby" fit, and projectile puked formula in her crib, on the pretty bumper, through the crib rails, and on the wall. I picked her up when I thought she was done and got a shoulder full for myself. Not again.

She's still screaming mad unless we're holding her... and when we're holding her she won't sleep. Daddy, smart guy that he is, decided to take matters into his own hands and they're out for a car ride. This better work.

Dani, if you're reading this... I'll bet you're laughing your ass off at me. I took a photo of the prune puke shirt just for you. Cheers!

P.S. It worked, but she screamed all the way to the high school before she stopped crying. Gads! I'm going to bed.

  8. Ohhh! Well, Welcome to the club!
Maya still throws up if she gets too worked up when she throws a fit! I have actually caught it in my hands...you will get used to it, you will still gag and cry yourself, but it does get easier to deal with...just wait until she takes her diaper off during a nap and paints her crib and walls with...well you know, now THAT you will never get used to!
    I know EEEW!
Today will be a better day.

  9. Ha! Oops, pardon me, my ass just fell off. Don't worry, it's not "bad" until you start calling the dog over to clean up the mess for you. It's just easier that way. It sounds like I really do need to get you some good old fashioned cloth diapers! Remember, if it can't make it through your washer and dryer or your dish washer, it doesn't belong in your house with a baby!

    Big Smiles!

  10. I agree with a good body massage when they are so fussy like that, it does wonders. I also am going to add that although Allie wasn't/isn't so much a puker, I have been there before with another kiddo and I highly suggest forgoing the pretty bumper for a week or so and letting her throw her little fit. I know it sounds mean and you & Keving might not be ready for that just yet, but when/if you do get to that point, she will stop doing it when she doesn't get the response she is looking for! It's still so new and fresh for you guys, I totally understand if you aren't ready for it, but it will work... Just wipe up the mess, change her jammies and right back down she goes... I know, I sound like a mean Mommy right now, but I'm really not! LOL

  11. Ah yes, initiaition is the best. And I thought Aiden throwing up in bed (thus all over us including our hair) was bad. I am pretty sure that second puke episode tops ours!

  12. Boy, have you really hit the ground running. It will be good to meet with the IA doctor so you can get a feel for whether the formula she's on is the best for her needs. I know all babies puke up, but it may be worth asking if what she's drinking might be contributing to the massive spitups.

    Calgon, take Sarah away!!!!!

  13. Sarah,

Um, I think you ROCK! As a new mommy, I was certainly not initiated with PRUNES. I had it easy- breastmilk doesn't stain. Seriously, cleaning up TWO throw-up messes in one night certainly earns you a bubble bath to yourself and the husband out with the baby!

    Miss Hannah Claire,

Your mommy and daddy waited so long for you that they'll surely put up with anything. But, go easy on them or you might not get cake on your special day. And you want cake- trust me! :-)

Love to you both and prayers for deep sleep when you can get your head on the pillow!

  14. Yep, you're a true momma now. My son, Logan spit up like that all the time. I can't count the number of times I had to get the carpet cleaned (I ended up buying a carpet cleaner). I can never figure out where all the puke comes from! It's a mystery!

  15. I am so sorry. I am sitting here laughing with tears because I totally understand. I so have been there. I'm crying, they're crying, we're all messy! And the places it gets... if only our houses had self-cleaning switches like ovens! I feel for you and I'm there for you if you need someone who understands and you can cry with. I'll make you laugh, I promise.

  16. I don't care how much you love motherhood, puke is just horrible. I feel for you. Virtual hugs coming your way.

  17. Reed's first time was actually on the driveway. However, the other day, he pegged me as we were getting in the car to head home after a lunch with Jeff. I got to smell it all the way home! Someone gave us a little green machine for a baby gift. They said it was great for vacuuming up the vomit. Fun being a mommy!

  18. Oh what fun for you all! Sorry it has been so messy lately! Yes, as the others say, you do get used to it though!!

  19. Hi Sarah,

We had that same thing with Jia. She would work herself into a frenzy every time we put her down in her crib and almost always in the play pen. She would then jam her hand in as far as she could and make herself puke. The first month home, she had these "puke fits" several times a day and I almost always had to change her sheets at night. Someone else mentioned that you should just let her have the fit out, and I know that goes against "good bonding" thinking, but as soon as we let Jia have it out a couple times and settle herself down, we didn't have puke fits anymore. Today is 3months home and I can now put her in the crib drowsy, but awake, and she will fall asleep with no crying.

  20. Tamara, Thank you very much for your comment. This is the first and only time that Hannah Claire has done this. If she makes it a habit, I plan on doing exactly what you did... go "against bonding" protocol, and do this to stop this behavior. I chose clean her up, hold her, pat her back to comfort her, but *not* smile and make our usual faces with her to let her know that I wasn't pleased with this behavior. She looked at me strangely, trying to figure out why I wasn't smiling back when she started grinning at me. Hopefully she got part of the message. No making yourself puke when you're mad!
