last weekend at home without a kiddo

This was the last weekend we'll ever spend alone together at home without a kiddo for a long, long, long time. Woah! Some friends with kids suggested that we make whoopie in the kitchen and live it up. Uh... no whoopie in the kitchen. Sorry to disappoint. I think we did over 10 loads of laundry, washing everything that wasn't nailed down. Fridge cleaned out, floors vacuumed and mopped, bathrooms cleaned, humidifier running. My mom came over and helped on Sunday. She says that we passed Nana's inspection regarding our child safety except for some metal things and dragon toothpicks left over from Chinese new year that are on the bottom shelf in the kitchen bookcase. As long as Hannah doesn't like to eat large amounts of Sedona's dog food, we're good. I'm not sure how we could position the dog food where the 12 pound dog could get to it and the 15 pound baby could not. Oh well. What kid doesn't try eating the dog/cat food?

Here's a few photos of the disaster area that was the living room during all of the laundry sorting... and then the happiness in the dishwasher when we washed Hannah's baby spoons, plates, and sippy cups for the first time.

Here's Kevin's bag... all packed, zipped up, and ready to go.

Here's my bag: donations, gifts, travel books, Wendy's plastic utensils, and no clothes! I'm still deciding what to bring and how much. I'm thinking of bringing clothes for 5 days and having laundry done for us twice at the hotel in Taipei. I know it won't be cheap, but I want to leave room for other things in my bag. I'm bringing lots of underwear. I don't like the idea of strangers washing my underwear.

And then there's Hannah Claire's bag. I think I've been packing it for a month. Naturally, everything is all out Hannah.

Sedona thinks she needs a bag too. She says to throw in some treats and she's good to go.

I'm really pumped because another adopting family contacted us and we hope to have dinner together in Taipei. Woohoo! I'm thinkin' dumplings for our first night out.

Hope this work week goes by quickly. We leave for the airport at 8:30am this Saturday.

  6. My oldest ate LOTS of dog food. I would dribbles of dog food spit on his chin. I tried everything but our little Min Pin could not eat it unless it was on the floor. he is 10 now and does not seem to have any long-lasting effects from it. He swears now he didn't do it but he did from about 9-18 months! GROSS!

  7. We're in the middle of the dog food battle. As long as you can keep them from choking, it's fine.

Go see a movie together this week is my advice. It's the only thing I miss from my former life. :)

Oh, I agree with Kathy above, make it a point to see at least one or two movies in a theater before you leave!!

  11. I agree about seeing a movie!!! Definitely something we haven't done in the last year! Also, just an FYI, the Agora has a self service laundry upstairs.. we used it once and worked out fine for us.

  12. Beth, The Agora was my first choice... but it was booked for New Year's. The Grand Hyatt was my third or fourth choice. I really don't know a whole bunch about it... except that the breakfast buffet is supposed to be outta this world... and of course the location is right next to the Taipei 101.

  13. I could do a load for you if you wanted/needed me to. Give it to me Friday, and I'll give it back on Saturday . . . free of charge.

If that is too weird for you, then never mind. But, if it helps then no problem at all.

And, about the undies. . . you know you can always pick up some extras up at the night market. Or, yall can always get some disposable ones from any conveniently-located-on-every-corner 7-11. :)

PS: If you see our little girl, give her a kiss for us and let her know we're coming VERY SOON!

  15. We built a contraption to keep the (allergic) baby out of the cat food. Wood box with no lid (sides about 2 1/2 feet high) and little doors cut in at the base for the cats. I'm guessing our (umm) pleasantly plump kitty was a bit bigger than your Sedona and he could get in but our daughter could not-- she probably could have fit through the holes when she was a baby but it required more precise movement than she could manage. Just FYI should the beautiful Hannah Claire like dog food a little too much. ;^)

Have a safe and joyful trip!

  16. SATURDAY!!!!!

I am on pins & needles!

Did you find someone to pick you up from the airport?

    xoxo

  17. Rebecca, my parents are picking us up at the airport in our car with the car seat all ready. We're good! Thanx!

  18. Oh My Girl! You did not let me down. I knew that you would be taking a whole suitcase just for Hannah Claire. I imagined you not being able to decide which outfits to take...so you just took all 3 or 20.;)
I cannot tell you how happy Stacy & I are for you & Kevin. My advice from a 5-timer- The most important thing a good parent can have is a sense of humor AND having a kid shouldn't stop you from 'doin' it on the kitchen table'! You just have to wait until your sure she's asleep! ;)

    Love you my friend,

    Andrea

  19. Happy, happy travels to Taiwan and Hannah Claire! I have been following you via your blog and the yahoo group from the beginning and I can't wait to see a picture of you with your daughter in your arms. Enjoy the journey! And as for the house - pretty soon there will be cheerios on the floor and toys everywhere and you'll think it's never looked better.

    Godspeed!!!

You may be enjoying the packing, and you'll be ecstatic the night before you meet her, and then at peace when she's in your arms, but there will be nothing like Home Sweet Home with your daughter! Sleep well, travel safe. And don't forget to BLOG!

You don't know me, and I can't even remember how I stumbled across your blog, but I've been following it for months now. I just wanted to say congrats to you and your husband and wish you luck with your trip to pick up little Hannah Claire. You are going to be an absolutely fantastic mother and I'm so excited for you! 25. I just wanted to say that I stumbled across your blog (don't remember how), but I wanted to say congratulations to you both. What a wonderful thing to happen during the holiday season! I also follow another blogger who is currently in China (they'll be home Christmas day!) It is amazing to read everyone's journeys of adopting - something my hubby and I would like to do someday (once our own children are older of course).
Again congratulations and have a safe and happy journey!
